One of the most beautiful antique homes in New Hampshire, the grand summer cottage on the shores of Lake Sunapee was once the home of Secretary of State John Milton Hay. Tours of the house, given May through October, explore its architecture and the lives of the family who lived there. The home’s main draw, however, is its sculpted estate, full of terraced gardens, topiary animals, and a mile-long nature trail along the shore of the lake. The grounds are open even during winter and make for a pleasant hike (or snowshoeing expedition) any time of year.
