Missouri is nicknamed The Cave State and this one is not like any you’ll find in other parts of the country. That’s because you ride through the cave in a tram — it’s that big and that long. In addition to many of the geologic features showcased here, Fantastic Caverns tells a great story of the history of the region — when the massive underground rooms that were once a speak-easy and when Union and Confederate soldiers took shelter here during the Civil War.
The brave and independent young women in your family may be pleased to know that this cave was first explored in its entirety by 12 women from Springfield.
Note that they will turn the lights out for a few moments to demonstrate the absolute darkness in the cave. It’s just a few moments, so you may wish to prepare your youngest children, if necessary.
