El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, and is about 45 minutes outside of San Juan. Though most visitors take guided tours into the rainforest, it is easy to reach independently for families with a car rental. The rainforest winds high into the mountains, offering spectacular views at every turn. There are a number of beautiful waterfalls throughout, including those that end in lovely swimming holes in which to cool off.
El Yunque is best experienced by hopping out of your vehicle and hiking one of the many marked trails from which you can get a close-up view of the flora and fauna.
Admission
There is no entrance fee to the park itself, however admission to the visitor’s center is $4 per adult. Children 15 and under are free.
Hours
The park is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., though overnight camping permits are available.
