El Faro Lighthouse

Attraction

Want to wear out some rambunctious kids? The half-hour hike up to El Faro Lighthouse isn’t easy (and shouldn’t be tackled by those who are unfit or physically challenged), but it gives kids (and grown-ups) a sense of accomplishment when they reach the highest lighthouse in the Americas at 523 feet above sea level.

The lighthouse, which first began operating in 1879, is still manned, and tours are free. If you’re worried about reaching the summit, good news: the paths are carefully maintained and even have lighting for evening hikers. At the top, refreshments are usually for sale, but bring water for the trip anyway.
