Located about 30 minutes outside of Oaxaca City in a village called San Bartolo Coyotepec, the kids will love the pottery-making demonstrations here, while the adults will enjoy making a few purchases. The authentic black pottery studio was started by famous potter Dona Rosa in the 1950s and her family continues to use her methods for creating the shiny pottery today. When you arrive at the shop and studio, ask if there will be any pottery demonstrations. The kids will love to see the entire process done by hand. There is not even a pottery wheel in the traditional sense; the “wheel” is actually two clay plates that are hand spun on top of each other as the pottery is shaped. It takes about a month to create one piece from start to finish, and while molds are used for some pieces, each is created by hand. Bring your pesos because you will want to take some pottery home. Note: Credit cards are not accepted here.
