Most visiting this 798-acre monument come for two main attractions: Devils Postpile, a collection of visually stunning basaltic columns, and Rainbow Falls. To see both, expect a moderate hike of about half a mile. At this 7,560-foot elevation, though (especially on a hot day), the hike may feel pretty strenuous — particularly for little ones. Bring sunscreen, bug sprays, snacks and water. Kids can get a Junior Ranger book at the ranger’s station.
Day-use visitors cannot park at the monument but must arrive by a shuttle bus (fee), boarding at Mammoth Mountain. The park is generally open from mid-June to mid-October.
