Whether you’re traveling from Delaware to Cape May, New Jersey for a day trip or vacation, the ferry terminal has plenty to offer, even if you don’t plan to hop on the boat. The 17-mile ferry ride across the Delaware Bay takes about 85 minutes, one way. Families will see lighthouses, harbors, boats and maybe even dolphins as they sail across the bay. Kids receive a coloring book as they board the ferry and learn how to tie a few knots while onboard, too. A first-time sailor gets a certificate from the captain.
There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating along with tables and chairs, free Wi-Fi and a couple common area televisions. The ferry can accommodate 100 vehicles, and 600 to 800 passengers at a time. Bikes and pets are welcome onboard, too.
If you don’t have plans to cross the Delaware Bay, visit the Lewes Terminal. Kids will love walking the short boardwalk along the waterfront and there’s mini-golf and a playground, which are free for the public to use. Keep an eye out for the ferry mascot, Pete the Pirate, who may wander around the terminal from time to time. Events throughout the year, like Breakfast with Santa or the Easter Bunny, are also held at the terminal. A gift shop can be found both onboard the ferry and in the terminal.
Cost and Schedule
Check online for fares and schedules, as they change throughout the year. Both vary based on whether you plan to bring your vehicle or travel as a foot passenger. Children under 6 years old are free. Booking a reservation for a vehicle is recommended.
Dining
A concession area serving snacks and beverages can be found onboard the ferry, as well as several bar areas that offer live music on the weekends. On the Rocks Restaurant and Bar is outside at the Lewes Terminal and offers a great place to grab a meal with a waterfront view, even if you don’t have plans to board the ferry. Things like burgers, crab cakes, salads and sandwiches are on the menu. The kids’ menu includes chicken tenders, hot dog and clam strips.
Parking
A large parking lot surrounds the ferry terminal. Vehicles can be left in the parking lot overnight if you register your vehicle with the Information Center. Free electric car charging stations are also available.
