A haven for migratory birds, nesting sea turtles, and the endangered Alabama beach mouse, this federal wildlife-refuge features over six miles of hiking trails along with beach access. For families, a good starting-off point is the Jeff Friend Trail. The one-mile gravel loop offers scenic views of a lagoon and is manageable with an all-terrain stroller. Bring bug spray, sunscreen, and water. Trails are open from dawn to dusk.
