The nearby town of Bad Wimpfen is another well-preserved walled medieval town, without all the tourists of Rothenburg. If you and your kids are up for a climb, head to the top of the Blue Tower, inside the town’s castle fortress. This is where Germany’s first and only female tower keeper still lives. No longer watching for invading armies, her main duty is keeping a watchful eye on tourists and collecting the 1 Euro fee for climbing the tower.
