This 1,400-acre park proudly reigns as the largest cultural park in our nation. The park is home to 15 museums, botanical gardens, performance centers and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. The question isn’t whether to visit Balboa Park. The question is how many days will you devote to this crown jewel of San Diego? For play areas, visit Bird Park at Cedar or Upas for small, cushioned spaces good for young kids. Morely Field is a larger playground, which welcomes dogs. The largest play areas are the Pepper Grove and 6th Avenue playgrounds.
Families may also enjoy the park’s many gardens, including the Children’s Ethnobotany Garden, as well as the San Diego Zoo Botanical Collection. Kids will also love riding on Balboa Park’s Miniature Railroad and the more than 100-year-old Balboa Park Carousel. There are also 65 miles of hiking trails through the park, with 19 specific trails of various lengths and difficulty. After working up an appetite, visitors can turn to more than a dozen restaurants, snack bars and cafes to replenish.
