The salt flats at Badwater Basin definitely qualify as a Death Valley must-see. Take a picture by the entrance, then walk out onto the boardwalk and look on the side of the mountain for the iconic “sea level” sign to get a sense of just how low this valley is. Come well-prepared with lots of sunscreen, hats, and water: it’s not uncommon for Badwater to reach over 100 degrees (in the summer it’s been known to reach 120-130). The “water” in Badwater typically amounts to little more than a puddle–not much can survive in air that dry.
