Volcano House is Hawaii’s oldest hotel and it sits on the rim of Kilauea caldera inside Volcanoes National Park. Hotel amenities include complimentary Wi-Fi and bicycles, a lending library with guidebooks, history books and children’s books, a gift shop, restaurant with a view of the caldera, a lounge, and rooms with views of Halema’uma’u Crater, as well as rustic cabins and campsites. It is very close to park activities including the Jaggar Museum & Overlook, Thurston Lava Tube, and Kilauea Visitor Center.

The restaurant looks out over a huge crater. Surprisingly the fish and deserts were delicious. For those who are disabled or are not able to walk the trails this is a good relaxing place to view the crater. The wait staff were very nice.

Arrived to check in and only one lady at reception who was on the phone taking a booking after waiting over 10 minutes she put the call on hold and speedily checked us in, telling us we had a free drink but could we come back for it later. We were given no further information about the hotel as she had the caller on hold. The lady was very nice but she needed extra help. Asked someone from the restaurant to confirm my dinner reservation but they didn’t have it but there was table at 7:30 pm, we subsequently got 2 calls trying to get us to eat at 6 or 6:30. On going to the restaurant it was obvious they wanted to close early and that was why they wanted us to eat earlier. At just after 9pm the staff started to lock up the bar not even bothering to ask if we wanted another drink and a lady started to clean the windows.
The bedroom was a decent size looking over the crater, although the settee was very worn. I personally didn’t like the fact there was an open window in the bathroom which opened into the hallway thankfully there was a blind on it.
The lounge area was ok except for the fact that all the plastic on the chairs were peeling off and looked grubby.
On check out the same as check in with the poor receptionist stuck on another call while we waited.
At $375 on a room only basis it was extremely over priced, I know it is in an excellent position being the only hotel in the park but without any lava to see it is really only a tired old wooden building, over priced, under staffed on reception and in need of some TLC. I’m sorry I had to write these comments as I was so looking forward to this part of our 2 month trip.
