It's difficult finding a hotel in London. There's always a problem or disappointment, no matter how much you pay. This time, we hit the jackpot. The Capital Hotel is intimate and friendly but in no way cramped. The people at the concierge desk and the registration desk were always engaging, smart, and helpful. We booked a "Premium King" room in order to be sure we had enough space (London hotels can be claustrophobia-inducing). The room was a perfect size: cozy but not cramped.Comfy bed and pillows, lovely bathroom with modern shower, lots of cupboard and drawer space, Nespresso machine, refrigerator, great in-room air-con, a steam iron with board, complementary Wifi that was fast and reliable. The hotel is a mere half-block from Harrods, but Basil Street is quiet, and we were never disturbed by outside noise. The location is perfect: steps from Knightsbridge tube station, lots of pubs and coffee places nearby, an easy walk to Hyde Park Corner and on to Piccadilly. We look forward to staying here again, no doubt about it.
Special thanks to Graham the concierge: he has been endowed with a perfect blend of humour, kindness, and smarts...and puts those qualities to great use.
A special recognition to the manager, whose name I don't remember (young, handsome, Korean descent): he has the right touch with staff and guests, and made us feel very welcome.

I had stayed at the hotel 3 years ago and found it quite charming with a spacious quiet room in the older part of the Hotel. However, my return visit proved shockingly disappointing- I booked the hotel as a birthday treat and we checked in at 10pm to a Fawlty Towers style check-in to room 259, where I was immediately asked to sign a piece of paper for 'registration purposes', on closer inspection I actually noticed I was being asked to sign an additional tip of 18 GBP tip per night of my stay. The room was old-world decorated with nice furniture but poorly maintained and inadequate in many other areas, we asked to be shown another room and were shown a simialr but smaller room which had a cheaper Holiday Inn type feel which we refused. faults with the room were as follows:
1. There was scaffolding up against our window, blocking much of the natural light coming into the window.
2. There was circles of thick yellow mold on the bathroom ceiling
3. The room was extremely noisy with a large gap under the main door (which also served as a source of strong light).
4. The room had a connecting door with the room next door, there was clearly no proper insulating measures undertaken, as you could clearly hear normal conversation from the other guests, also morning cleaning/ hoovering sounded like the maid was actually in my room.
5. The net curtains were dirty and had tears, the main faux curtains were torn to ribbons in sections.
At our check out, we were not asked if we had enjoyed our stay nor any other small talk, I think the staff may have been guilty knowing their former 5* hotel in now sadly more akin to a 3*.
