This backpackers' hostal received a glowing review from Lonely Plantet guide, but we were disappointed all around.
Brit's does have two things going for it: price and security. We paid 80 soles a night for the three of us, which translates to about US $26. We got three twin beds and a tiny room with cable TV and a decent sized bathroom.
Alas, the much-touted hot water was barely lukewarm during our three-day stay. When you are hiking all day, a hot shower is a must at 6 p.m.
Breakfast was not included, so we paid about the equivalent of US$3 a piece for greasy scrambled eggs and the local bread. Strangely, breakfast was not available before 8 a.m. (strangely because climbers and hikers are out of the hotel by 7 a.m. at the lastest), but an exception was made for us. The eggs were so greasy we chose to eat the next day at a restaurant on the Plaza de Armas, which was an inconvenience.
My husband claims that he felt safe leaving his geear at this hotel, and nothing did happen to our cameras or laptop. The staff at the front desk were pleasant , I might add.
A note to people with disabilities (not your average traveler to Huaraz): This six story hotel has no elevator so you must walk several flights to your room.
