Reviews

My overall review is not great.

by Newberryfruits

I booked this Club Med resort for myself and my 12 year old daughter hoping that she would be able to make friends and attend clubs, so that I could quietly read on the beach. Unfortunately this did not happen because everyone is French speaking with very little to accommodate English speaking guests. We arrived on a Thursday so had to work everything out for ourselves as most guests arrive on a Saturday and have a welcome evening. Even if we had known this, we would not have been able to understand the language well (our fault for not speaking French, of course, but we weren't told this when we booked).
The place itself is quite lovely, especially the beach, but the constant music from the pool or bar near the beach meant there was no opportunity to find a quiet place to read or relax. Every day there is a music quiz in the bar, every morning there was the Mission Impossible theme tune playing at the pool, it was like Groundhog Day.
The food is pretty good and there is lots to choose from, but it is hard to find a table for 2, so we often ate in a group of French speaking people, and we felt excluded. On the first night, I asked for some wine and instead if being given the perfectly good free wine, I was offered the wine menu and paid $25 for a bottle of wine I didn't really want. All because I didn't understand the rules.
I booked an afternoon boat trip which was quite good, but there was no opportunity for a swim in the sea and the commentary was in French, so we were given a booklet with the information in English, but no opportunity to ask questions or know exactly where we were.
The sailing/water sports were ok, not great. We took out a double canoe and had a good time on the sea. The sea is warm and calm and lovely to swim in. And the weather was amazing.
We played quite a bit of table tennis and there was a tournament that we entered, which was good fun and we met some lovely French speaking people.
The room we stayed in (Room 101, oh the irony) was tiny. It needs a big overhaul as it is tired and worn out. The bathroom is clean, but needs renovation. There was only one socket, so it was impossible to use the fan and charge devices at the same time. The fan was too high on the dressing table to be of much use and it was hot.
Transfer to and from the airport was excellent, just the two of us in an air-conditioned taxi.
Overall, I don't think the holiday was great value for money and we should have been informed that this was a wholly French speaking resort.

All French

The resort is approx. 50 years old and it can be seen. The location however is great - in an area where population is fairly low. The nature is untouched and magnificent.

The resort is well thought out. Architecture is interesting and typically for late sixties.

Everything is in place to for Cargese to be a very nice resort.

However we found the the resort being mismanaged. It is French and only French and you will be punished for not being french or speaking french - the spoken language is French only. If you ask for an explanation in English you will be told to mind your own business.

We failed one suitecase from the Airline (Brussels Airline). In the end it arrived four days late. But our complain is that the reception and the management as such didn’t wanted to be involved (everything including the flight was bought from CLub Med). They claimed we should talk to the airline directly (in Ajjaccio - all french speaking). They offered us 50 euro pr day, so that we could do some shopping- underwear where like 8 km away and could be reached via a bus which would charge us 8 euros each way.

The most disappointing thing though where the claimed sailing facilities. Well there where actually 13 “old” hobie cats. These where managed bye 4 arrogant guys (or hippies) who beside from sleeping in a tent on the beach all day - made it virtually impossible to actually use them. I managed to sail 2 times 30 minutes in 4 kn of wind. - Sailing is NOT an option at Cargese Club Med ! They where aggressive either 100% ignorants when you tried to approach them.

We didn’t felt welcome at Club Med this time (we went 6 times before). Probably we will do Club Med again - but try to avoid a fully French facility.

The restaurant are run by nice people - but there is a lot of birds in the restaurant eating your food. Also you will share the facilities with dogs and cats.
