Look up “classic New England inn” in the dictionary, and you might find a picture of this white-clapboard establishment in the Monadnock region of Southern New Hampshire. The inn dates back to 1796, when it served as a waystop for travelers from Boston. While it’s been completely modernized, it still has the welcoming spirit of a small-town country lodging and tavern.

Located on a pristine town common, the inn has 10 rooms filled with country quilts and a mix of modern furniture and antiques. A roomy second-floor unit has two queens for families, and two even larger suites on the 3rd floor include a king bed, day bed, and twin-sized trundle. Another small room on the 3rd floor had two twin beds for even larger groups. Rooms include luxurious linens on the beds as well as locally made soaps in the bathrooms.

The inn also has a dining room that serves pub favorites and a range of gourmet flatbread pizzas Wednesday to Sunday. A free continental breakfast also includes several hot items such as scrambled eggs and a popular “breakfast pizza.”
