The Plaza Hotel (really more of a motel) features simple, comfortable rooms with double beds; a small family can fit in one double room but for more space, consider booking two. Most rooms include a flat screen TV and they all feature free wireless Internet. Conveniently, they also all come with a full sized refrigerator and a microwave. Some also add a sitting area where families can relax or play a game. The friendly staff are available 24 hours a day at the front desk, and daily housekeeping is included in the room rate.
Take a morning or evening walk over to Hubbard Creek Lake, or wander around the park-style grounds at the back of the property and use the fire pit and barbecue grill as you watch the Texas sun go down in the wide-open sky. Ultimately, the hotel is a simple and unassuming place to stay, but when you’re on a budget and don’t need luxury, it fits the bill.

We pre booked this room about a week in advance and this was the only hotel that had any rooms available. We arrived on a Friday and went to check into this most run down looking establishment. I paid this very homely lady for 2 nights in hopes that the room was in better condition that the front office. I was handed my key and went to room # 3. I opened the door and wow, the smell of cigarettes punched me in the face. There are little gut fixtures over the beds that are literally hanging, and the bedding was so old and worn. It was 50.00 a night but really I expected better accommodations than that. So we drove into town and found another place to stay that was a little more pricey but so much nicer, and it didn’t smell like a bar.

My wife and I made a journey out to Fort Griffin to take some photos of the Milky Way and needed a place to stay for the night. We stumbled upon this place and were pleasantly surprised with the overall experience.
It has gone through some owner changes, and the web site is not up to date, and has some issues, but in spite of that, we did manage to get a room booked. Our total came out to $55.00, which is really good for Saturday night in a hotel that is close to the lake. The lady that greeted us at the front desk was very polite and sweet, and made the check in process quick, easy, and very pleasant.
It's obviously an older hotel, as evidenced by the wood paneling in the rooms and some of the fixtures, but I'm okay with that because it gives the place some character. Unlike many hotels, it's actually more of a motel, they actually turned the a/c on before our arrival so the room temperature was comfortable upon our arrival. We've traveled a lot, and this is not always the case. It was especially nice to walk into a cool room when the outside temperature was 102 degrees.
The room wasn't fancy, but it was clean and pleasant. The bed was firm, but comfortable, and it had a flat screen tv mounted to the wall above a fairly large dresser that provided lots of drawer space for clothes and other stuff. The only real issue in the room was the fact that the shower head appeared to have been installed that was about 4 feet tall. My wife is 5' 4" and it was too short for her to stand under. It was a bit annoying, but really that big of a deal. On the plus side, all of the rooms have a full sized refrigerator, microwave, and fairly stable, free wi-fi.
The only real issue we had, and this is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, is that the door to the office was always locked so we had to ring a doorbell or knock to get them to let us in. It wasn't a big problem when we arrived on Saturday afternoon, as she was very quick to respond. Sunday was a different story. We packed up and were headed out around 9 am, and never got a response at the door. My wife knocked and rang the doorbell multiple times, and I even tried calling them on the telephone, but couldn't get an answer. We ultimately left with the room unlocked and the key on the dresser. Did I mention that actually have an old school metal key attached to a plastic fob with the room number. I can't remember the last time I used one of those. Anyway, we left and I emailed them later and let them know that we checked out and left the key in the unlocked room.
In spite of that, we will definitely stay here again when we come back out this direction.
