With the U.S. and Cuba working together for the first time in 50 years to allow Americans to visit the Caribbean nation, commercial flights may begin offering direct flights between the two countries in the new year.

The U.S. and Cuba have reached an agreement regarding direct flights, and it is expected up to 20 flights will be allowed to travel between Havana and U.S. destinations. American Airlines, which currently offers charter-only flights between the U.S. and Cuba, has submitted a proposal to begin flights from Miami in 2016. United Airlines has shown interest in offering flights, and JetBlue is also submitting plans from Florida and New York airports.

If approved, direct travel to Cuba will become easier for U.S. citizens. However, regulations are still in place requiring American travelers to meet certain guidelines to visit Cuba, which includes professional research, religious activities, participating in competitions and academic programs.
