Historic Philadelphia is a popular destination for families looking for historic adventures, and this summer the city brings back its “Once Upon a Nation.” From Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day, Historic Philadelphia produces living history programs to teach kids about our nation’s beginnings. This special 10th anniversary will include special surprises and celebrations, including a day-long celebration on June 18. The Once Upon a Nation 10th Anniversary Celebration will feature a Military Muster, Once Upon a Nation Storytelling Benches, and a reading of the Declaration of Independence behind Independence Hall.

Other special events include a chance to meet and free Ben Franklin at the Historic Philadelphia Center in a free regularly scheduled program. The program will be accompanied by the Liberty 360 3D Show in the PECO Theater. Once Upon a Nation History Makers and storytellers will be found around Philadelphia during the season, and a storytellers contest invites students to submit their own stories about their favorite person from history. Ten winning stories will be performed on July 25.

Other surprises will include giveaways to area museums, attractions and tours on random dates and with random encounters. Guests may even receive free carousel rides in Franklin Square or receive free ice cream.
