JetBlue was one of few U.S. airlines that allowed checked bags at no charge — a convenience for families looking to save when flying. Unfortunately, big changes are en route.
According to an official statement, the budget carrier has announced it will add baggage fees in a new set of branded packages, similar to Frontier and American Airlines:
“Beginning in the first half of 2015, customers will be able to choose between three branded fare bundle options. The first of these will be designed for customers who do not plan to check a bag, while the latter two will offer one and two free checked bags, respectively, along with other attractive benefits, including additional TrueBlue points and increased flexibility. This new merchandising platform will enable JetBlue to tailor its offering to individual customers’ needs in a way that is simple and transparent.”
With this change, Southwest becomes the only U.S. airline to offer free checked bags — passengers can check up to two bags at no charge.
In an effort to add 15 seats to each Airbus A320, JetBlue will also reduce the amount of leg room by about an inch, from 34 to 33 inches.
The changes are part of new revenue initiatives to appease investors.
