Overview

The ACE Adventure Resort in Oak Hill, West Virginia, offers families 1,500 acres of outdoor fun and spacious accommodations. Choose from one of the many cabins, the largest of which sleeps 10 adults and six children. Enjoy amenities like full kitchens with all the essentials, TVs, central heat and air conditioning, decks with hot tubs, campfire areas and more. Some cabins are also pet friendly.

Activities at the resort range from rafting and mountain biking to hiking and horseback riding. The ACE Adventure Center is located on the resort and families can sign up for water sports and day trips along the New and Gauley Rivers. For more low-key fun, kids can join the organized camp that is open to children ages 5 to 10. They’ll enjoy outdoor discovery hikes, natural scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, games, lake activities and more. The camp is open daily, seasonally, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with full- and half-day sessions available at $79 or $49 per child, respectively.

Enjoy onsite dining at Woody’s Lakeside Smokehouse, which serves breakfast and dinner daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Meals are buffet-style and feature eggs, pancakes and French toast for breakfast, and barbecue, salads and seafood for dinner. Breakfast is served from 6:30 to 10 a.m. and dinner is served from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday through Friday, and until 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Lost Paddle Bar & Grille also offers food and drinks during the summer season. It is open for dinner and evening cocktails from 5 to 9 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Additional outdoor adventure and touring companies are located near the ACE Adventure Resort. The closest airport is Yeager Airport in Charleston, West Virginia, about 70 minutes away.

Mixed experience...really great service, very dangerous river!

Loved everyone there. Very accommodating and friendly and knowledgeable. On Sunday power failed trip at 8:30am I went out with my son. Bryant was your leader. Penny was guide.

Overall I felt that our boat dumped too often and we had to get out to get off rocks twice. It was far more problematic than other boats. I didn’t understand how important the guide was. Maybe it was a bad day for her, but it was far worse for me with three broken ribs. I’m heading to hospital now. Had to spend an extra night at ACE because I couldn’t move.

Big picture is I’m not sure that Penny is qualified enough. Maybe just a bad day for her, maybe not.

Again, overall I think it is a mixed experience; great customer service, but the river rafting is very dangerous and guide selection is CRITICAL

Upper Gauley

My husband and I booked a quick weekend getaway to celebrate by birthday. We stayed in a Cozy Cabin which was conveniently located within walking distance to the restaurant. The cabin did the trick, but next time I will pack a wine glass and a corkscrew. The restaurant and staff were amazing. The pizza is delicious and we got the buffet the second night. I went in with expectations of the food being mediocre because it is a resort, but it was fantastic.

We had Steve R. as our guide for the Upper Gauley. He gave us a fun ride with lots of surfing. Steve is very good with getting through the rapids and I did not paddle nearly as much as I did when we did the Lower Gauley previously. This meant that I was able to hold on and not fall out, while others in the raft were free to experience all of the bumps and waves that they liked. My husband fell in while we were surfing Hungry Mother and they caught it on video, so of course we had to purchase it. Soaking in the hot tub back at our cabin after the trip was pure heaven.
