A road trip across northeastern Arizona typically means basic accommodation offerings, which is why La Posada is a breath of fresh air. Originally built in 1929 as one of the last great railroad hotels, the hotel features outstanding décor, fine dining, arts and exhibits, and a trading post. Because the hotel is something of an oasis, it requests “well-behaved children,” and provides them with a library and board game. Well-behaved pets are also welcome.
Standard rooms with one king bed, two full or two twin beds are the beginning price point, with deluxe rooms offering more room, balcony rooms featuring, of course, balconies, and whirlpool rooms providing hot tubs. Each room has its own unique décor, all with a traditional Southwestern theme. Cribs and rollaway beds are available, as are a limited number of mini-fridges. Wi-Fi is available in the lobby and ballroom, but unfortunately doesn’t make it into the guestrooms due to the concrete walls.
The hotel continues a restoration project that’s included beautiful public gardens — all guests should make a point of seeing them. Guests also receive a self-guided walking tour of the hotel, which explains the history, art and architecture of the property, along with access to the Mion Museum, open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. And just off of the lobby, guests can watch three documentaries that run continuously between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.
