In 1855, there was only one place to stay in Galena, and this was it. If you’re looking for a historic hotel right in the middle of the bustle of Galena’s Main Street, you’ll feel right at home at the DeSoto House Hotel. Rooms come with double, queen or king beds, and suites offer sitting areas with fireplaces. Kids will enjoy learning that Abraham Lincoln, Stephen A. Douglas and Ulysses S. Grant all stayed here. There’s a self-guided walking tour and three onsite restaurants. Where there isn’t a kids club, there’s plenty of charm, probably best suited for kids old enough to appreciate this hotel’s historic treasures.

It has been a while since I reviewed the DeSoto House,it has been a couple years.
So since we just got back I thought I would type my observations once again.
New faces at the front desk, hearing about the passing of a wonderful employee, Linda and meeting a employee we have not met before, Chris in the General Restaurant bar, lower level.
After spending a lovely day walking the streets, checking out shops finding some items that had to come home with us, we headed back to our home away from home, for the evening. (too cold in the evening to stroll) We wandered to the General Restaurant for a complimentary glass of wine and met Chris, running the bar. That is where we found out about Linda, we had not seen her the last several trips. Some of the employees you see every trip and maybe talk or catch up with, they make the place you stay so much more than just a hotel. Another reason we are drawn back year after year. (I believe we are on year 23) We had decided to eat in the General, Salmon for me and Scallops for my husband after our complimentary appetizer. We enjoyed another glass of wine with our meal. You will love the herbed bread they serve before the meal. The staff was always around, but left us alone unless we needed something. Headed back to Chris for a scotch and met another couple with whom we talked with for over an hour. In my mind meeting new people is one of the reasons to travel. Our room called to us along with the piece of chocolate that made a perfect end to a perfect day. Thank you Desoto Hotel and all your staff for making us always feel special and welcome. See you next year.

Ken was unbelievably busy the entire time we were at his bar. This never affected his wonderful, timely customer service. We are two people also in the restaurant business that were blown away by his knowledgeable, kind nature. If I lived here, I would frequent his bar often. The food and drinks were delicious as well!
