Overview
by Candyce H. Stapen
Designed in 1935, this stone, timber and adobe lodge located near the canyon rim, like El Tovar, is a National Historic Landmark with a rustic western feel. Unlike El Tovar, the rooms at Bright Angel are more basic and, generally, smaller. Since most of Bright Angel’s rooms contain only one bed, this lodge is best for a parent and a small child able to share a bed or for families seeking two rooms. Although some units come with canyon views these rooms cannot be guaranteed.
Be aware that all of the units lack televisions and some rooms lack private baths. The cabins come with private baths and televisions. Meals are available at two lodge restaurants.

Arriving by train and then a courtesy shuttle to its front door, the back of the Lodge was our entrance to the south rim walkway; truly a stunning introduction to the majestic Grand Canyon.
The Lodge itself is a rustic step back in time. It's history room is well conceived and informative, providing some wonderful perspective on its (and the areas) commercial origins.
The location of the Lodge is prime; sitting on the south rim of the Grand Canyon, with stunning panoramic views and easy walking distance to several historic structures. This is a great place to start one's visit, end one's visit, and/or just relax and enjoy one's visit.
We ate 2 lunches at the Arizona Room, both of which were quite good.
Whether one is staying overnight, or just visiting for a day; this lodge is definitely worth a walk through.

We stayed in a cabin a few steps from the South rim. Comfortable bed, tv, coffee and tea facilities, fridge, bathroom.
It is a short walk to the reception area where there are two restaurants, cocktail bar, water machine, great gift shop.
We had a fantastic breakfast one morning the other morning we needed to leave at 6 am but there is a shop that opened at 5.30 selling coffee and sandwiches. We are dinner in the El Tovar hotel next door which was excellent but you have to book a long time in advance.
Yes it is busy at the South rim but once you park your car you don’t need to use it again until you leave. There are buses to other areas and a hop on hop off bus along the Bright Angel Trail so that you can admire all the views and walk as much of the trail as you wish. Get up early and you will have the place to yourself and the stars at night are magical.
Go to the main visitor centre and watch the short film about how the Grand Canyon was formed.
