The home of Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy, and his presidential library, Beauvoir was constructed from 1848 to 1852, and after two owners, Davis purchased the property in 1878. The property sustained substantial damage in 2005 from Hurricane Katrina, but has since been restored. Today, visitors can tour the home, see the library cottage where Davis stayed before buying the home, and tour the presidential library and museum.

Around the grounds, you also can stroll through Varina’s Rose Garden, see the Jefferson Davis Soldiers’ Home Cemetery, and view the Tomb of the Unknown Confederate Soldier. While a good experience for children of all ages, it’s especially beneficial to children studying Civil War history as it provides a tangible site to relate to their studies.
