With the Long Island Sound to its north and the Peconic River to its south, Riverhead is considered the entry point to the South Fork and the Hamptons, as well as the North Fork and Long Island’s wine country. But before heading east, spend some time enjoying the boundless energy of this coastal community.

Kids will love exploring the Long Island Aquarium, which opened in 2000 and is partly responsible for the revitalization the town experienced around that time. Located on three acres along the banks of the Peconic River, the aquarium celebrates the local and global underwater world through indoor and outdoor exhibits, interactive experiences, and on-the-water discovery tours.

Nearby, the Long Island Science Center features over 30 hands-on activities and displays that allow visitors to delve into science, technology, and engineering.

Riverhead is also home to one of the oldest stock car racing tracks in the country and car enthusiasts will love checking out the Riverhead Raceway. Spend an evening at the track watching a race or head over for one of their special events including demolition derbies, school bus racing, and fireworks nights.
