Victoria is home to Canada’s oldest Chinatown. Families can stroll the narrow streets and explore the many shops and restaurants. Reds and golds cover the streets and the ornate Chinese archway called the Gate of Harmonious Interest on Fisgard Street marks the official entrance of Victoria’s Chinatown. In the early 1900s, Victoria was the major entry point for Asian immigrants who were coming to British Columbia due to the gold rush and work on the Canadian Pacific Railway. Today, visitors will find a Buddhist Temple, a Chinese public school, among yoga studios, markets and more. Make sure to stop at Fan Tan Alley, between Fisgard and Johnson streets. It’s the most narrow street in all of Canada at just 35 inches wide at its most narrow point. Families will find local shops, souvenirs and homemade ice cream along this tiny alley.
