This fort was strategically and surprisingly taken by the British during the War of 1812 and an unsuccessful campaign to reclaim it in 1814 resulted in the death of Major Hunter Holmes, for whom the fort was renamed. The fort was not a full-fledged fort and time and erosion has destroyed most of its original structures, but the area still remains an interesting historic site with spectacular views of the Straits of Mackinac and Lake Huron.
