On the outskirts of Orcas Island are the small Wasp Islands, once used as hideouts at the start of the 20th century for smugglers bringing illegal immigrants and liquor into the U.S. from Canada. Today, the islands are home to towering Douglas fir trees and the red-barked madrona trees, nesting eagles and river otters. Take the three-hour guided kayak trip with Shearwater Kayak Tours and there’s a good chance to spot seals and sea lions as well.
