Beneath the streets of old Edinburgh remain the underground closes where families lived and worked — and died during the plague — in the 17th and 18th centuries. As the city grew, it grew up, with the wealthiest living at the top of the city, away from the filth running through the streets, where the poorest lived. In the late 1700s, the city covered up the lower closes with new construction, and historians uncovered the mysteries beneath, said to be quite haunted. Guided tours of the closes are provided daily, giving families a glimpse into Edinburgh’s past.
