Beyond canal boats, bicycles are the best way to get an authentic taste of Amsterdam. Rent bikes from any number of places throughout the city and do your own one-hour, half-day, or full-day tour of the city, or sign up for a tour from a company like Joyride. Country tours take you through the Vondelpark, past houseboats, and out to a working windmill, with the final destination: a farm where cheese and clogs are made. The terrain on this 12.5-mile (round-trip) ride is flat and very pleasant. If your family is sporty and fit there is no better way to experience Amsterdam and the outskirts than this four-hour tour. However, even Joyride’s owner warns this is not suitable for children under 11 years old, or those who are either non-athletic or haven’t clocked a bit of mileage.
